Building Safety Bureau
Overview
Building safety

The Building Safety Bureau (BSB) regulates the construction or alteration of buildings and any other structures erected within the City through the issuance of building permits, review of plans and specifications for building materials and methods, and the regular inspection of construction up through completion of the project. New buildings, when completed, are issued a certificate of occupancy which then allows the building to be occupied.

The BSB Chief is the Building Official of the City. He possesses nearly every certification issued by the State Department of Business & Professional Regulations for plans review and inspections of all types of construction activity and also serves as the Damage Assessment Team leader under the City’s Emergency Management Plan.

The Chief is assisted by a Building Inspector who is certified by the State to conduct structural inspections of all types of buildings and, within residential construction only, all trades – electrical, plumbing, etc.

The Bureau enforces a state-adopted Building Code which is the minimum code(s) for the regulation of building construction within the State of Florida. The BSB has permit and inspection fees which fully fund this operation. The BSB also conducts inspections associated with the issuance of Business Tax Receipts required to conduct business within the City.

In fiscal year FY 05-06 the BSB issued 3,754 permits, conducted 1,359 plan reviews, 4,670 inspections, and collected more than $541,000 for permits and inspections.
